Google AI Overviews: how to appear in them
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries shown at the top of some Google searches. They answer the question directly, with links to the pages used. For a business, being featured can capture attention even before the classic results. Here is how they work and what you can do about it.
How AI Overviews choose their sources
An AI Overview does not appear on every search: Google shows one when it considers a summary helpful, often for long, comparative or practical questions. The answer relies on pages from Google's index, displayed as links. Google explains that it may run several searches on subtopics to put this answer together.
The pages selected are not necessarily those in the first organic position. A page that precisely answers part of the question, such as a lead time, a price or a compatibility detail, can be cited. This is an opportunity for small businesses that publish clear answers about their specialties.
Technical requirements to check
According to Google, there is no special markup required to appear in AI Overviews. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet in the results. Check in Search Console that your important pages are indexed, that essential content is in text rather than inside an image, and that your internal links make them easy to find.
Preview controls still apply: the nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet directives limit what Google can reuse, including in its AI features. If a key page carries this kind of restriction by mistake, it cannot be cited. This is a simple point to check with your web provider.
Writing pages AI can cite
A page that is easy to cite answers a specific question in its first lines, then goes into detail. It provides verifiable elements: figures, conditions, dates, service area, usage examples. It avoids vague claims like "the best service" without proof. Your customers' frequently asked questions, written in their own words, are often a good starting point.
Think about comparisons too. Buyers often ask about the difference between two solutions or two plans. A page that honestly compares your offers, or explains when to choose an alternative, gives AI useful material. It also builds trust with visitors who land on your site.
AI Overviews and conversations: two different measurements
Being cited in an AI Overview for one question says nothing about what happens next. The customer may click, rephrase, or continue in Google's AI Mode with more specific questions. The final recommendation is often decided in that follow-up. That is why Valooo.IA looks both at AI Overviews for the questions in your market and at complete conversations that go all the way to the choice.
This double reading avoids two mistakes: believing that a citation guarantees a sale, or, conversely, overlooking a useful presence early in the search. You see where you are cited, where you are actually recommended, and which competitors take your place when the question gets more specific.
Tracking the impact over time
Google includes traffic from AI Overviews in the usual Search Console reports, without separating it. To track the effect of your actions, watch the pages that answer buying questions: their impressions, clicks and the quality of the leads they generate.
AI Overviews evolve: the sources cited for the same question can change from one week to the next. A one-time measurement is only a snapshot. Regularly replaying the same questions makes it possible to tell a trend from a passing fluctuation, and to link progress to the actions you actually took.
